Remembering Odetta – mahogany voice of the civil right movement – Video
Remembering Odetta, that great mahogany voice of the civil rights movement, is probably still singing – in heaven. She passed away today, (December 3) of heart failure. She was famous for her outspoken politics and inimitable deep rich voice which touched the heart of anyone who ever heard her sing. She had a powerful voice and presence. I remember hearing her sing in some intimate club in the village in New York and feeling as though I was about to be knocked off my feet. She had that effect on me.
Odetta didn’t just want to sing black truth to whites but simply to sing the truth to whoever needed to hear it. That’s what distinguished her. I also remember that at the end of the set, she looked down at me and smiled.
Well Odetta – go with God. You were one helluva lady and I for one will miss you. Just remembering Odetta – that mahogany voice of the civil rights movement – puts a smile on my face – and pride that I knew her. If you want to hear one of the most powerful voices of this century – buy an Odetta album. There are many.
Find something that puts a smile on your face – something that you can commit to and puts joy in your life as did Odetta. Have a great day!
