George Carlin Dies at 71
George Carlin Dies at 71. One of his most famous anti-establishment stand up bits, full of drug references as well as a routine on the seven dirty words which cannot be uttered on television – was originally done by Lenny Bruce in the sixties. Lenny once said, “If Jesus had been killed twenty years ago, Catholic school children would be wearing little electric chairs around their necks instead of crosses! George Carlin once said, “I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.” Both comics had much in common as their humor was totally off center, had hidden compassion, biting anti establishment wit and both had a penchant for drugs. Another of George’s witticisms was, “I went to the bookstore and asked the saleswoman, Where is the self-help section? She said that if she told me, it would defeat the purpose!” They both led turbulent lives and in many ways their humor was ahead of it’s time – particularly Lenny Bruce.
